Women’s tennis opens season at home

Tech’s women’s tennis team began its 2010-11 season on Sept. 17-19 with a three-day invitational tournament. The tournament was held at Bill Moore Tennis Center at Tech, with Oklahoma State University, University of Georgia, Tech and Yale.

Freshman Murial Wacker and freshman Rocio Alberta Lopez began Tech’s part in the tournament, both winning the ninth and tenth matches of singles. Wacker won 6-1, 6-1 against Georgia, and Lopez won 6-3, 6-3 against Yale.

Tech finished out their day of singles winning six out of eight of their matches against Oklahoma State.

The Jackets then won three out of four of their doubles matches against Yale. Senior Viet Ha Ngo and Wacker won in a tiebreaker 9-7 in match three.

The second flight of Sasha Krupina and Caroline Lilley defeated Blair Seideman and Elizabeth Epstein, 8-5.

The lone loss came in the first doubles as junior Jillian O’Neill and sophomore Elizabeth Kilborn fell to Lindsay Clark and Vicky Brook 8-5.

“We’re definitely putting an emphasis on doubles this year,” said Elizabeth Kilborn in an interview with ramblinwreck.com.

On day two of the tournament, the Tech’s doubles again won three out of four of their matches, this time against rival Georgia. The second doubles of Rocio Lopez and junior Lynn Blau truly shined, not losing a game for the 8-0 victory.

Junior Caroline Lilley and senior Sasha Kuprina also won their doubles match against Georgia in a marathon match, winning 8-6. This was Lilley’s second marathon match of the weekend, after losing to Oklahoma State in singles on Friday, 7-5, 4-6, 6-4. Lilley won her second day of singles against Yale.

“In singles it just came down to tricking my body into feeling like I wasn’t very tired… this is the time to push through that stuff,” Lilley said in an interview with ramblinwreck.com.

Tech’s singles fared quite the same as doubles on day two, earning six out of eight of their wins. A heartbreaking three set loss happened to Kilborn, who won her first set 6-3 before losing both her next sets 7-5, 7-5.

The Jackets other loss on the day came in the eighth singles match as Alberca Lopez was defeated by UGA’s Kate Fuller 6-3, 6-4.

Jillian O’Neil and Kilborn started out day three with an 8-4 doubles win over Oklahoma State in the first match. Ngo and Wacker won 9-7 in match two after fighting back from being down 7-3.

Ngo, O’Neil and Wacker all finished their weekend with a 3-0 singles record.

Tech will be playing next in Calif. on Oct. 2 at the ITA/Riviera All-American Championships.
