Track and field races at Auburn

The men’s and women’s track and field teams competed at Auburn University over the weekend. For the women, senior Jenny Sims won the women’s 1500-run with a time of 4 minutes and 32.07 seconds. The team finished well on the whole in the women’s 800m. Freshman Amanda Montgomery placed No. 2 in the event clocking in at 2:25.51. Sims finished just behind her in third with a time of 2:16.66, and freshman Cory Aitken crossed the line No. 8 with a time of 2:23.29.

After taking first last weekend in the women’s 100m hurdles at the Yellow Jacket Invitational, Shanita Moss picked up a back-to-back win in the event and also qualified for the NCAA Regionals with a time of 13.19 seconds. Freshman Leslie Njoku picked up a NCAA qualifying time in the women’s 800m hurdles with a time of 59.72 seconds, finishing just behind Moss.

Junior Kimery Hern won the hammer throw with her NCAA qualifying distance of 187 feet 7 inches. For the men, senior James Lemons II qualified for the NCAA triple jump with a distance of 50 ft. 5.25 in. Sophomore Steve Marcelle placed second in the shot put with a distance of 59 ft. 1.5 in., which also qualifies him for the NCAA Regionals.

Freshman Alphonso Jordan placed No. 4 in the long jump with a distance of 23 ft. 10in. Lemons followed him in the No. 6 spot with a distance of 23 ft. 5.25 in. Senior Cristan Duvall placed No. 4 in the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 9:33.22. Sophomore Mohamed Himeden finished No. 7 in the steeplechase with a time of 10:00.39.

The Jackets return back home to Tech next week where they will be hosting the ACC Championships. The Championships begin on Thursday, April 17 and runs through Saturday.
