Five reasons Tech students should vote for Harris

This election is on a razor’s edge, and voters across the country will make a decision between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump on November 5. In case you have missed any of the ads or texts, Harris is the candidate of our future. I encourage you all to vote for Harris and her new way forward. Here’s why:

What has the Biden-Harris Administration won for you?

Even from the depths of the pandemic, the Biden-Harris team replaced the former administration and guided the United States out of a slump and into a period of growth — a rebound even our allies envy. Median household income meets or exceeds pre-Covid levels. Although the prices of goods remain too high, wage growth has kept up with inflation. The progress of the administration did not stop simply at economic recovery. The Biden-Harris Administration has led in both infrastructure and gun safety, passing the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and the Safer Communities Act. Vice President Harris was the tie-breaking vote that saw the passage into law of the Inflation Reduction Act and the CHIPS and Science Act. At each step, Harris has fought to bring down costs, keep our communities safe and invest in domestic infrastructure and manufacturing.

Lowering Costs

In the wake of the pandemic, big corporations raised the prices on everyday goods. Demand for basic necessities — healthcare, groceries, housing — will always be high, and corporate interests know that. Harris will enact the first-ever federal ban on price gouging of food and groceries. She will expand on the Biden policy, which capped insulin costs at $35 a month, to include not just seniors but all Americans. Harris will make certain the tax rate on long-term capital gains will be 28% for those earning a million dollars a year or more. The burden will fall on those with the greatest ability to pay. No one earning less than $400,000 a year will pay a penny more in federal taxes. In fact, more than 100 million Americans will receive a tax cut when Harris restores the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit.

Reproductive Freedom

In June 2022, the Supreme Court — with the eager help of Trump-appointed justices — overturned Roe v. Wade, eliminating decades of settled law. Women have died because states decided it was more important to dictate the healthcare decisions of women than help them start a family or provide adequate sexual health guidance. Harris will restore reproductive freedom to women in every state in the country. Unlike her opponent, Harris will protect access to contraception and IVF treatment. The government has no place telling women when to start a family and by what means.

Housing

As Attorney General of California, Harris took on big banking interests and won $20 billion for middle-class renters and homeowners. She knows what it takes to protect families. In equal measure, she understands that homeownership brings security, freedom and the opportunity to build generational wealth. As President, Harris will build 3 million new, affordable homes by offering a new home builder tax credit and up to $25,000 for down payments. Instead of favoring corporate landlords and big developers, Harris will put the needs of America’s middle-class families first.

American Innovation and Industry

Building on the more than $900 billion investment of the Biden-Harris Administration, Harris will continue to support American workers and American manufacturing. That rational investment has added over 700,000 manufacturing jobs to the economy in areas once considered death row for American factory workers. Harris will create an America Forward tax credit to invest in areas of critical need. Workers in the iron and steel industries will prosper, and their communities will be revived. The development of biomanufacturing, AI, aerospace and clean energy technologies will be a priority of a Harris-Walz Administration. Vice President Harris believes the United States must foster and grow the high tech industries of the future. American workers and national security depend on consistent commitment from the White House, and Harris will provide that commitment.

On Nov. 5, America has a choice to make. The one thing Americans want above all else is security. Security in income, in housing, in work is the wellspring of all opportunity. President Kamala Harris will provide that security. She will fight to lower costs for families and consumers. She will ensure America is the country where the jobs of the future are created through investment in the technologies of the future.

Kamala Harris will be a president who lives by a simple creed: America is not a nation of fear and grievance — we are a nation of hope and opportunity. Vote for a proud American who reflects your values. The only person in this race who represents the best of us is Kamala Harris.
