The fourth annual Sting Hunger Now is happening April 2 and 3 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. in the Student Center Ballroom. The annual service event is open to everyone on campus. The goal is to package over 100,000 meals for children and families in developing countries and
crisis situations.
Sting Hunger Now works in tandem with the international organization Stop Hunger Now. The vision of both of these organizations is to create a world where hunger and starvation is no longer a major cause of death in poorer countries.
Noah Mohl, second-year ECON and vice president of fundraising for Sting Hunger Now, said that “what we do is we help raise money through corporate sponsorships, personal donations as well as student organizations. Our goal this year is $30,000, which would roughly feed 100,000 people.
“The event we host is a meal packaging event. You can come volunteer at the event anytime during the two days. It’s not something that is very taxing or that requires a lot of attention. Come with a group of friends and just hang out and have fun while packaging the food. We will have a raffle going on throughout the event thanks to CapitalOne. You can come and help, and you might even win an Apple Watch while you help feed a hungry child.
“This year, the food is going to Uganda. The food goes in a small bag. Everything that goes into it is like rice or nuts, imperishable items. There are also instructions that are on the bags that will help the recipients cook the food. Each bag can feed up to 6 people and costs only $0.29. So for under a dollar, we can feed up to 20 people.”
Sting Hunger Now is also still accepting monetary donations of any size. Even a dollar can help them reach their goal of feeding 100,000 people.
Sting Hunger Now is a relatively new organization and is made up of six members who all serve an executive position. In order to pull of this event, they rely heavily on volunteers. The executive board consists of President Shelby Laws, VP Recruitment Mary Latimer, VP Marketing Kinsley Winn, VP Logistics Teresa Spinelli and VPs of Fundraising Noah Giles
and Mohl.
Together, they have come up with ideas in order to create a successful event. They have had several proceeds nights at restaurants like Monday Night Brewery and Moe’s in order to raise the money. They have visited every Greek Organization and visited classes to advertise. They have even flyered on Skiles walkway. Interested students can contact anyone on the executive board or show up on either day of the event to help their cause.
