WREK Radio, the student owned and operated radio station on campus has been facing several problems over the past few months originating from equipment damage due to a burst water pipe later winter.

WREK, Tech’s student-run radio station, has run into another obstacle this year as the Georgia Tech Cable Network (GTCN) has dropped the WREK channel, moving its audio content to the TV Guide channel instead.

Over this past winter break, WREK radio suffered extensive damage to their storage facility in the annex building to Alexander Memorial Coliseum. A steam pipe that ran through the room burst, filling the locked room with heat and heavy moisture.

The Athletic Association (AA) and International Sports Properties (ISP), agreed to a new 10-year partnership that will pay Tech nearly $50 million but cuts in half the revenue WREK receives from ISP for athletic event broadcasts.

In honor of the 40th anniversary of the station, WREK radio officially kicked off their HD station using their new HD transmitter on Tuesday, March 25, 2008 at 12:12 PM.

While other students went away for the holidays, WREK staff logged in close to 200 hours of work during the winter break in preparation for the new high definition (HD) transmitter that will be installed this spring.
