Men’s basketball team to play in tournament in Bahamas

The starting frontcourt that led Tech’s men’s basketball team to the second round of the NCAA Tournament will have to be replaced. Forwards Gani Lawal and Derrick Favors have announced that they will forego the remainder of their NCAA eligibility to enter the 2010 NBA Draft.
A week after losing to Maryland on a buzzer-beating three, the Jackets took the court at Alexander Memorial Coliseum this past Saturday, Feb. 27 to face Boston College. Tech shot 52 percent from the floor and went 11-for-12 from the free throw line on their way to a 73-68 win. Three days later, the Jackets headed up to South Carolina to face Clemson, this time losing 91-80.

Despite leading with two seconds left in the game, Tech’s men’s basketball team (18-9, 6-7 ACC) fell to Maryland on Saturday, Feb. 20 in College Park.

Tech’s basketball team was victimized by early foul trouble, and No. 10 Duke took advantage as the No. 21 Jackets dropped Thursday’s contest against the Blue Devils 86-67 at Durham, N.C. The loss was Tech’s second against a ranked opponent this year; the Jackets are now 3-2 against ranked teams.

After a tough loss on the road against Duke, the No. 19 Jackets headed back home on Saturday, Feb. 6 to face North Carolina State. Despite blowing a double-digit lead late in the second half, Tech held on to win the contest 73-71. The victory puts the Jackets at 5-4 in the ACC and 17-6 overall.

Tech basketball fans who followed the team during its historic 2003-04 season could easily recall the energy that Clarence Moore brought to the team as the Jackets’ top reserve forward.
On Saturday then-No. 22 Tech routed Kentucky State at home, 98-50.
