Twice this morning students in the Field dorm were evacuated due to fire alarms. Field residents were informed in an email from Joseph Slade, the residence hall director for Field and Hopkins that "The fire appears to have been caused by a leak near the electrical system; as such, before the electrical system can be fully repaired, it must be thoroughly dried. To do so, our Facilities team will be bringing in fans and blowers designed to move large volumes of air". No injuries or damages to student property were reported.
With the increase in newer student housing, Burge Apartments have had little use over the last few years. As a result, Tech has decided to schedule the building for demotion.
A new housing option called ThinkBig has allowed students with a common interest to live together and participate in themed faculty-led group activities. While the program aims to enhance the college experience for its participants, organizers hope as it grows it may eventually be the cure for faculty-student disconnect all over campus.
It’s a well-oiled machine, worn with the experience of age, and carefully engineered to every last detail. A library of protocols and carefully planned chains of command guide its movements.
Adapting to living with another person (or three) can be one of the most trying parts of freshman year. Unfortunately, unless you have unnatural sway over the housing department, it will be a full year until you can run to the safe havens of North Avenue or West Campus apartments. During the interim we suggest a few rules for surviving the trauma of living within ten feet of another stressed out 18-year-old.
Housing is currently gearing up preparations for a Living Learning Communities (LLC) initiative that will bring in its first group of residents in Fall 2009.
