The recent violent on-campus sword attack underscores the fact that the legislation currently going through the Georgia General Assembly to repeal the ban of firearms on campus endangers the Tech community. Allowing guns on campus will not fix the crime problems that plague the surrounding areas of Tech, rather it will only exacerbate the current problems, and potentially create new dangerous situations on campus.
Kshitij Shrotri, a Tech AE PhD, 2008, has been charged with aggravated assault after he allegedly stabbed Samer Tawfik, a post-doctoral fellow on Thursday, Feb. 4 at approximately 1:15 p.m. at the Weber Space Science and Technology building. The victim was taken to Grady Hospital for treatment of his injuries.

The Georgia Tech Police Department released a report yesterday that a house in the Home Park neighborhood was subjected to a forceful home invasion. The house was on Ethel Street near Hemphill Avenue. The invasion took place at approximately 11:55 p.m. when six people were in the house.
On Nov. 22 at 3:35 a.m. another armed robbery happened on the west edge of campus. According to a Georgia Tech Police report, a male and a female were walking on 8th St. near Williams St. when they were approached by two black males. The two men pulled out a handgun and demanded that the couple hand over their money. The couple responded that they had no money.
The Student Government Association’s (SGA) Planning and Development committee held its first fall campus safety walk on Nov. 12, following the upsurge in crime both in and around campus over the last few months.
Two separate armed robberies occurred over the last week off-campus. Both of the crimes occurred within the expanded patrol zone of 500 feet past campus covered by the GTPD. The two instances mark the 8th and 9th armed robberies since May in and around Tech’s campus, and serve as another reminder of the increasing crime in the Atlanta area over the past few months.
The Wachovia bank on State St. at Tech Parkway was robbed this morning. The Georgia Tech Police Department says to be on the lookout for a Silver Maxima with Georgia license plate AGW 1098.
Crime on and around campus is something that most students are aware of on some level. For most, though, their experiences with crime will be limited to what they see in television dramas and a heart-pumping scene or two in an action movie.
Atlanta Police Department Chief Richard Pennington announced plans to place four more police officers on and around Tech campus. The announcement was made on Tuesday Oct. 13 at a City Hall press conference following a string of violent crime around both the Tech campus as well as the Atlanta University Center (AUC).
