Tech campus was informed on Wednesday morning via email from Institute President G. P. “Bud” Peterson that Gary Schuster, provost and executive vice president for Academic Affairs, will be stepping down from his post. He has served as provost since Aug. 2006.
After serving over eight years as Dean of the College of Engineering (CoE), Dr. Don Giddens announced his decision to retire from the Institute, effective on July 1, 2011. Following his retirement he will become a part time research faculty member at the School of Biomedical Engineering. His decision comes at a time of change within the Institute, as it embarks on a new strategic plan and adapts to the continued poor economic conditions. According to Giddens, he has been considering retirement for several years. He was persuaded to stay following the departure of former Institute President G. Wayne Clough until a new President was in place.

As it prepares to announce a new Strategic Plan in the coming days, the Institute welcomed two individuals crucial to the execution of the plan and achieving its goals. Dr. Zvi Galil assumed his role as the Dean of the College of Computing (CoC) on July 1, following a two year vacancy at the post. In addition, Dr. Jacqueline Royster will begin her tenure as the Dean of the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts (IAC) on September 1. This transfer of leadership represents just a few of the many changes to senior level administration in recent weeks.

Over the coming weeks and months, the Institute will develop a strategic plan that envisions Tech’s future and provides a roadmap for achieving that goal. The purpose of the plan is to transform Tech into the premier educational institution for the 21st century. The hope is to develop a plan and to implement it over the next 25 years, in time for the 150th anniversary of Tech’s founding.
At the end of this summer, Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts (IAC) Dean Sue Rosser will be taking a cross-country trip all the way to San Francisco--to stay. After a ten-year tenure at Tech as dean, Rosser will be taking up the position of provost at San Francisco State University (SFSU) beginning this August.
