Baseball kicks off summer leagues

Derek Dietrich capped his freshman year off with several freshman awards, including most recently the Rivals.com Freshman of the Year, this summer he takes aims to take his bat to Beijing as a member of the US Collegiate Baseball team to try and reclaim the title the gold medal they lost in 2004. Dietrich is currently fifth on the team with a .280 batting average and leads the team in slugging percentage at .520.

Other Jackets include seven Jackets in the Cape Cod League, four in the Cal Ripken Sr. League, three in the Coastal Plain League and the Northwoods League and one in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.

Of the Jackets on the Cape Cod League teams, Chris Hicks sports a 5.68 ERA in 6.1 innings over seven appearances with a .345 batting average against. Zach Brewster has a 7.82 ERA in 12.2 innings. Cole Leonida is hitting .179 in 13 games as catcher with one home-run and six RBIs. For the Cotuit Kettleers, Brandon Cumpton, Tech’s mid-week starter, has an 0-1 record with a 6.00 ERA and nine innings pitched in three games. Zach Von Tersch has a 5.14 ERA in seven innings pitched in three games.

All the Jackets in the Cal Ripken League are on the Maryland Orioles. Jeff Rowland is second on the team among qualifiers with a .298 batting average, 10 RBIs and 13 stolen bases.Patrick Long is sporting a .294 average through 14 games with one homer and 10 RBIs. For the pitchers, Kevin Jacob is 1-0 with a 0.61 ERA in 14.2 innings over eight appearances.

Taylor Wood is 1-1 with a 3.65 ERA in 24.2 innings. Tony Plagman, in four games, has four hits in 14 at bats and one RBI. Deck McGuire, in five starts, is 4-0 with a 1.45 ERA. In 22 games, Chris House is hitting .272 with two home runs, nine RBIs and 10 stolen bases. Thomas Nichols is hitting .239 with 10 RBIs.
