A new restaurant serving a wide variety of American high-end pub food will be constructed in Tech Square. Called “The Barrelhouse”, it will also be equipped with a full bar. It is expected to open around mid-late Oct.

After serving over eight years as Dean of the College of Engineering (CoE), Dr. Don Giddens announced his decision to retire from the Institute, effective on July 1, 2011. Following his retirement he will become a part time research faculty member at the School of Biomedical Engineering. His decision comes at a time of change within the Institute, as it embarks on a new strategic plan and adapts to the continued poor economic conditions. According to Giddens, he has been considering retirement for several years. He was persuaded to stay following the departure of former Institute President G. Wayne Clough until a new President was in place.

Over 200 students rallied around the Campanile Tuesday, August 31 for the Back-to-School Barbeque Kick-off hosted by Georgia Tech Campus Republicans (GTCR). The event featured speeches by US Senator Johnny Isakson and Georgia Legislature House Representative for District 106 Melvin Everson.

The Institute’s long awaited Strategic Plan was formally announced on Tuesday morning, a little over a year after the campus-wide initiative was launched. Institute President G.P. “Bud” Peterson delivered the Strategic Vision for Tech to an almost capacity crowd in the Ferst Theatre Auditorium. The audience included current students, faculty, staff, alumni and community leaders.

For the third year in a row, the Institute received top marks in the Princeton Review’s Green Rating, earning a spot on the Green Honor Roll along with 18 other colleges and universities. In addition, the Institute received 18th place in Sierra Magazine’s list of ‘cool schools.’ The Institute received a score of 81 for its sustainability efforts, with the top school receiving an 88.6. Last year, Tech was placed 21st, just half a point away from the top 20.

As it prepares to announce a new Strategic Plan in the coming days, the Institute welcomed two individuals crucial to the execution of the plan and achieving its goals. Dr. Zvi Galil assumed his role as the Dean of the College of Computing (CoC) on July 1, following a two year vacancy at the post. In addition, Dr. Jacqueline Royster will begin her tenure as the Dean of the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts (IAC) on September 1. This transfer of leadership represents just a few of the many changes to senior level administration in recent weeks.
